Abstract
The transition to turbulence in Rayleigh-Benard flows is associated with the breakdown of large convective structures, the appeareance of new timescales and the loss of synchronization properties. We show how this leads to a sudden increase in the number of degrees of freedom of the system not explained by the scaling of the spatial structures of the flow. Moreover, we analyze different unstable periodic orbits before and after transition and their impact in the global properties of the flow.
