Abstract

We study a 2-dimensional version of a seed dispersion model in which the ingestion of seeds by diffusing animals plays a central role. The model consists of three compartments: seeds in growing plants, seeds in the gut of animals that diffuse, and seeds deposited on the ground after digestion.  The dynamics are influenced by various parameters, including growth, decay, harvesting, transport, digestion, and germination.  Of particular mathematical interest is the delay introduced by the transit of seeds through the animal, which significantly affects the dispersion velocity. We present both analytical and numerical results and compare them with those obtained from a previous study that thoroughly analyzed the 1-dimensional version of the model.
