Abstract

A central question in neuroscience is how behavior emerges from neural instructions. Specifically, how does dimensionality reduction occur, allowing neural networks with millions of degrees of freedom to produce low-dimensional dynamics capable of driving behavior? In this talk, I will use birdsong as a model to explore strategies for studying how the rhythmic properties of song are coded in the brain. Presenting results from neurophysiological experiments conducted in our lab, I will highlight challenges involved in extracting relevant information from neural activity within complex biological networks. We report evidence of low dimensional neural activity in a telencephalic sensorimotor area, during the song production in adult male canaries (Serinus canaria). This work shows how interdisciplinary approaches can be a valuable tool to study the neuroscience of perception and generation of complex motor tasks.
